Why the Bass?

sky-bass

a) he was worried he’d forget the flute on the bus

b) he’ll do anything to get out of having to ride the bus

c) he wants to play percussion;  he can’t until 5th grade, but they told him “the bass was like the drums”

d) “I don’t want to play something that sounds like screaming.”

e) he’s in kahoots with his dad to convince his mom that dad needs to trade in his Fit for a more spacious comfortable car…so…rent the biggest instrument you can find. Then when dad gets the bigger car, switch instruments. This last one is just a hunch….

  • I agree with Spoons. I’m a cellist myself…started in fifth grade. I’m now 41 and STILL wondering why I didn’t play the flute! But, I now have wheels on my case and I still love the low tones of the cello and bass.

As a mother of a violin player, I can honestly say the bass would be much more bearable for a beginning instrument:)

  • He is a adorable but wow that thing is HUGE! Seriously we would not have room for it in the house. Or we would have to abandon the upcoming baby. Or something. Still – it is a pretty big band like “cool” instrument once he can carry it himself and play in a sassy band! But I am getting ahead of myself. What if he trades it in for the piccolo once his Dad gets the car!

I like it. But remember, the stand-up bass requires that the player be a bit of a showman. While it is important to hit the note, stay in key and time, the true art of the thing will be his mastery of the spin move. It is important he be able to play while spinning his bass, beating it like a drum and dipping it like a dance partner. Watch Brian Setzer’s bassist and he will get the idea. Good Luck Star-Fighter!

  • I am with Jean on this one. He needs wheels.

Well, if he ever wants to start up a band, a good bassist is a fairly “rare” breed… That being said, I’m sure the guys and I can “borrow” bits and pieces of gear to help you listen to him practice… I think I saw an old 400W Bass amp in Carl’s bass-mint the other night… you should be able to hear every note crystal clear ;)

    E – Bwahahahaha!

  • Geez! I think he needs a wheel on the bottom of that bag!

From the mother of a cellist…..i feel your pain….but the practice sessions are much more bearable than most other instruments. Enjoy!

I’ll make his bring his instrument when we come to Chicago. He wants to see the big city. The boys can “jam”. Or eat peanut butter sandwiches with jam…
